Colour Management
Colour management refers to the controlled conversion between the colour representations of various devices, such as image scanners, digital cameras, monitors, printers and corresponding media. In order to achieve prints that are accurate to how they appear on your monitor it is important that your monitor and workspace are set up to current internationally accepted standards.
Monitors
Monitor calibration and profiling is probably the most important aspect of a colour-managed workflow. For best results we recommend using the X-rite Eye-One Display 2 to profile your monitor, however similar profilers such as the colorvision spyder will also offer adequate results. When setting up your colour measurement software we recommend setting your monitors White point to 6500K and gamma at 2.2. Monitor calibration should be done regularly to ensure your workspace remains accurate.
Photoshop Workspace
We work in Adobe RGB (1998) for all our Giclée prints and recommend using the Europe Prepress 2 defaults in Photoshop's colour settings
Edit - Colour Settings - Europe Prepress 2
If you are working in CMYK it is important that you convert your images to RGB
Image - Mode - RGB
Viewing Conditions
It is important that you view your monitor in a darkened room preferably with a monitor hood as ambient light and even the colour of your walls and floor can effect the overall colour of your monitor therefore creating inaccurate results.
Soft Proofing
Soft proofing allows you to preview how an image will look when printed on a specific paper on your monitor, simulating the paper colour and how inks will sit on it. In order to achieve accurate results it is important that you have completed the steps above. Icc soft proof profiles and installation details are available to download here
